Exercise Co-operative Key 2005 (CK 05) has
been designed as a combination air exercise (AIREX), command post
exercise (CPX) and live exercise (LIVEX). Allied Component Command HQ
Izmir (CC-AIR HQ Izmir) conducted the exercise which was hosted by
Bulgaria for the third time since 2001 but for the first time as a full
NATO member. Thirty nations, including all those in the region,
participated in the exercise, joined also by international
organisations such as the UNHCR and the Red Cross. A total of about
1,650 service members and about 64 aircraft were involved in this
year's exercise. During the exercise, the main operating air bases were Krumovo and Graf Ignatievo near Plovdiv, the second biggest city in Bulgaria. CK 05 was initiated on 25 August 2005 at Graf Ignatievo Air Base with the opening speeches given by the Co-Directors MG Mladen I. Kazakov, BUAF and BG David E. Clary, USAF. Co-operative Key 2005 was designed to allow the air forces of NATO, Partnership for Peace and Mediterranean Dialogue nations to practice and refine interoperability in air and limited land operations in support of crisis response and peacekeeping. France, the partner nation Albania and Russia, Mediterranean dialogue nations, Algeria, Jordan, Morocco and other nations, Serbia-Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina participated as observers. We
